I went in for a total knee replacement on January 10th. I have been having pain for a long time and it is getting worse. They said my knee is almost bone on bone. They had a cancellation and I only had 5 days to plan and prepare, which is a good thing so I wont worry about everything for weeks. The surgery was delayed for hours, but I finally went in after 3 pm. The doctor said it went well. I was in recovery for awhile. Because it was so late in the day, they had to keep me overnight. I was in a LOT of pain. I stayed in hospital until the next night. The pain pills made me so sick. I was nauseated for over 2 weeks. (I finally quit taking them because I can't stand being sick) I had to use a machine at home to help me exercise my knee. I also had an ice machine that I pretty much used continually. It helped with the pain and swelling. I had a walker, but with all our stairs, it had to be carried to wherever I was. I only used it for 2 weeks. I had a home Physical therapist come for a couple of weeks. Then I had to go to out patient therapy. They said I did too much in the beginning, so they want me to stay down and only get up for 15 minutes every hour. It is so hard to not be able to do what I want. At 2 weeks post op, they took out the staples. They said recovery will take months, and could be a year before I am out doing the things I did before. Doug has been wonderful and taking great care of me.
