We left Branson at 8 am. We drove to Kansas City, Mo. On the way we stopped at a quilting shop, and then an awesome Antique store in Amish country. We saw quite a few buggies going down the roads. We ate at The Cheesecake factory for one last meal before the airport. Kansas City has the most beautiful architecture. Lots of old buildings! Our flight was delayed for an hour because of a severe lightning storm. (It was too dangerous for the workers to go out and load the luggage onto the planes) We flew to Las Vegas and then drove home. We got to St. George at 10 pm. It was a long 14 hour travel day. I already miss Nauvoo and Carthage.
Trip to Nauvoo - Day #7 - September 27th, 2019
Today we did a lot more relaxing. We did laundry, played cards, and drove around Branson taking pictures of the huge business signs everywhere. We ate at Crackle Barrel. We ended our vacation by going to see the play "Samson". It was very well done. The scenery was awesome. We packed up, and are leaving for Kansas City early tomorrow, then flying to Las Vegas, and then driving home to St. George. It has been a fun vacation. Beth and Dave are fun to hang out with!
Trip to Nauvoo - Day #6 - September 26th, 2019
Today we drove around the city of Branson. It is for sure a tourist town. We went to the Imax and watched the show "Ad Astra" It was good. The seats were reclining seats. The screen was 6 stories high. Then we drove to a fish hatchery, and a lake. Very pretty. We ate dinner at the LoneStar Steakhouse. The highlight of the day was going to the Welk Theater and watching the show "The Million Dollar Quartet" (Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins) The singers were fantastic. Especially the guy who played Jerry Lee Lewis! They played so many of the hit songs we used to listen to growing up!!
Trip tp Nauvoo - Day #5 - September 25th, 2019
Today was mostly a travel day. We left Hannibal, Mo. and drove 5 hours to Branson, Missouri. We crossed the Missouri river on the way here. We checked into our condo, and bought groceries, did laundry, and watched a little TV. It is hot and muggy here. Tonight we are supposed to get lots of rain, and quarter sized hail.
Trip to Nauvoo - Day #4 - September 24th, 2019
Before we left Nauvoo we went to the Red Brick Store. This is where Joseph Smith owned and ran the dry goods store. Upstairs is where they started the Relief Society, he translated the Book of Abraham, he wrote The Articles of Faith. This is where the first Temple sealings were done, before the Temple was finished. It was cool seeing where he sat, and where he looked out at the Mississippi river.
We left Nauvoo and drove to Carthage Jail. My experience here is hard to write about. It was very emotional. The spirit in here was very powerful. To see the room where the Prophet was killed hit me harder than I thought. It is hard to explain, but in the actual room standing by the window that he fell out of when he was shot, I was filled with a very calm peaceful feeling. I knew for sure, that everything he taught is true. He gave his life for what he knew to be true. There are still bullet holes in the door. Once I was out of the room and outside where he fell to the ground, I could not stop crying.
Looking through the bullet hole to the window he fell from.
Trip to Nauvoo - Day #3 - September 23rd, 2019
The weather has cleared up. It is a beautiful sunny day in Nauvoo, in the mid 70's. We went to the Nauvoo Temple. The view from the front steps (of the Mississippi river) is awesome. The sun shining on the windows with the stain glass Morning Star is breathtaking. The monument out front of Joseph and Hyrum Smith's "last" ride is very humbling. They knew it was the last time they would see Nauvoo.
Then we went to the Women's Garden.
We took a wagon ride around Nauvoo and heard stories about some of the people that settled here. They were so strong and courageous. We went along the Trail of Hope, and read from the journals of the pioneers that crossed the plains. We toured all the homes and shops of the pioneers that settled here before they were driven out.
The last thing we did was go to the final resting place, of Joseph, Emma, and Hyrum Smith. It is in a peaceful plot of land overlooking the Mississippi river. While we were there, a big barge came floating by. His parents also have headstones nearby.
